Platform Lifts & Wheelchair Lifts in San Luis Obispo
When the steps at your own front door have become the hard part, a vertical platform lift — often called a wheelchair lift or porch lift — carries you and your wheelchair straight up — no transferring out of the chair. Installed in-house across SLO County and Santa Barbara County.
Where a Wheelchair Lift or Porch Lift Goes
Front porches — The three or four steps between the path and the door — the classic porch lift
Raised decks — Back decks and patios cut off from the garden
Split-level entries — The half-flight common in 1970s and 80s builds
Garages and carports — From the car to the house without the step
Hillside entries — Where the driveway sits well below the front door
Small commercial — Shopfronts and offices needing accessible access

The Specification, and the Work That Comes With It
Every lift we install is custom-fit to the entry rather than dropped into a standard opening:
- Lift heights from 3 to 10 feet, covering almost every residential entry on the Central Coast
- 750-pound capacity — a power wheelchair and its user, with room to spare
- Electronic interlock gates at the top and bottom, with a fully enclosed gate option
- Automatic self-folding lower ramp, so the platform is clear when not in use
- Battery backup, running from a standard 110V wall outlet
- Weather-coated outdoor models built for Central Coast salt air
And the part people underestimate: the preparatory work is ours, not yours. Concrete pads, electrical runs and deck or railing modifications are part of the job, done in-house by our certified technicians. You are not left finding a contractor to pour a pad before the lift can arrive.

Salt Air Is the Thing That Kills Outdoor Lifts
An outdoor lift in Cambria or Morro Bay lives a harder life than the same unit twenty miles inland. Salt reaches the mechanism year-round, and a lift specified for a dry valley will not age well on a bluff above the Pacific.
We specify weather-coated outdoor models for coastal installations, and we say so at the assessment rather than after the first winter. It is the same reason our outdoor stairlift work concentrates along the same stretch of coast.
- Weather-coated units for Cambria, Morro Bay and Cayucos
- Shell Beach, Pismo Beach and the Five Cities
- Covers and enclosed gates where the entry is exposed
- Serviced locally afterwards, by the team that fitted it

From the first call to a lift you can use, here is what to expect.
Call Us
Describe the entry: how many steps, indoors or out, and what has to fit on the platform. That is usually enough to know whether a platform lift is the right tool.
Free In-Home Assessment
We measure the rise, check where power can reach, and look at what the ground needs. No cost, no obligation, and we will say so if a stairlift or an elevator fits better.
Written Quote
One price covering the lift, the concrete, the electrical and any deck work — not an equipment price with the site work discovered later.
Installation
Our own certified technicians do the preparatory work and the install, then test the lift with you before leaving. Manufacturer warranty on the equipment.
Which Lift Is Yours
A Platform Lift Carries the Chair. A Stairlift Carries the Person.
That one difference decides almost every case. A stairlift runs along a staircase and carries one seated person, so the wheelchair stays at the bottom and someone has to transfer. A platform lift travels vertically and carries the user and their wheelchair, walker or mobility scooter together.
So the question is rarely "which is better" — it is where the obstacle sits. A staircase inside the house is stairlift territory. Three steps up to the porch, a raised deck, a split-level entry or a carport is where a platform lift earns its place, and where a home elevator would be far more machine than the job needs.

Platform Lift Installation Across the Central Coast
We install platform lifts throughout San Luis Obispo County, and across Santa Barbara County on request. Repairs and service calls are San Luis Obispo County plus Santa Maria and Orcutt.
Also installed in: Santa Maria · Orcutt · Santa Barbara · Montecito
Many homes along this coast were built on hillsides in the 1970s and 80s, with the living floor above the driveway and the front door at the top of a short flight. That shape is exactly what a platform lift was made for.

Already have a platform lift, or need a different lift entirely?
We service and repair vertical platform lifts of most major brands, including units we did not install — see platform lift repair. If the original installer is unreachable, that is not a dead end.
Where the obstacle is a staircase rather than an entry, see stairlift installation in San Luis Obispo and what a stairlift costs. For travel between floors with a wheelchair, a Stiltz home elevator carries both. Installing in Santa Barbara County? See platform lifts in Santa Barbara.
Platform Lifts — Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the difference between a platform lift and a stairlift?
A stairlift carries one seated person along a staircase. A platform lift carries the person and their wheelchair, walker or mobility scooter straight up, so nobody has to transfer out of the chair. That is why a platform lift is usually the answer at a front door, a raised deck or a split-level entry, and a stairlift is usually the answer on a staircase inside the house.
-
Is a porch lift the same as a wheelchair lift?
Usually, yes. Porch lift, wheelchair lift and vertical platform lift are names for the same kind of lift: a platform that carries a person and their wheelchair, walker or mobility scooter straight up the few steps between the path and the front door. We install them for porches, raised decks, split-level entries and carports across San Luis Obispo County.
-
Where can a wheelchair lift or porch lift be installed?
Porches and front entries, raised decks, split-level entrances, garages and carports, and alongside exterior steps. Indoors and outdoors both work, and small commercial properties too. We install lift heights from 3 to 10 feet, which covers almost every residential entry on the Central Coast.
-
Does installing a platform lift mean construction work on my house?
Less than people expect, but it is not nothing. Most installations need a concrete pad and a dedicated electrical supply, and some need a deck or railing modified. We do that preparatory work ourselves rather than sending you to find a contractor — concrete, electrical and deck modifications are part of the job, done in-house by our certified technicians.
-
Will an outdoor platform lift survive the coastal weather?
That is the right question to ask on this coast. Outdoor models are weather-coated for salt-air conditions, which matters in Cambria, Morro Bay, Cayucos, Shell Beach and Pismo Beach, where the air reaches the equipment year-round. We will tell you during the free in-home assessment whether your location calls for an outdoor-rated unit.
-
How much weight can a platform lift carry?
750 pounds, which comfortably covers a power wheelchair and its user, or a mobility scooter and a bag of shopping. If you are close to that figure or carrying something unusual, say so when you call and we will check the specification for your model before quoting.
-
What happens if the power goes out?
The lift runs from a standard 110V wall outlet and includes battery backup, so an outage does not leave anyone stranded outside their own front door. Interlock gates at the top and bottom stay engaged, and an automatic self-folding lower ramp keeps the platform clear when it is not in use.
-
How much does a platform lift cost?
It depends on the lift height, whether the unit is indoors or outdoors, and how much preparatory work the site needs — a concrete pad and an electrical run move the number more than anything else. We give you a written price after a free in-home assessment, measured against your actual entry rather than an average. Call (805) 821-1383 and we will come out at no cost and no obligation.
-
Do you service platform lifts you did not install?
Yes. We repair and maintain vertical platform lifts of most major brands, including units installed by someone else — see platform lift repair. Every new lift we install comes with a manufacturer warranty, and we stand behind our installation work.
